What can the human brain learn from how a database works.

There is a battle going on in every database and the same battle in every human brain. The battle is simply Memory vs. CPU (processing). We either rely on indexes to recall data or we count on the CPU to calculate the resulting data.

Some basics regarding relational databases, they are not as complicated a concept as one might think. It's quite basic, if you have a telephone book, you have a database (or a table). If you then have another book (like a medical record list from the hospital) you can relate the two. Why is that important? If you relate the two, you can determine if a certain area code in the phone book has more allergy related illnesses. Finding out that more people who live next to high-power lines in your phone book have some form of cancer. Relating data is a very powerful thing, the human brain's incredible recall abilities are directly related to it's ability to "relate" data. We store color in one area, and shape in another. Smells in one area and happy thoughts in another! The details are obviously still very sketchy, but you get the idea.

A balance in the design of the tables that store the data in a database must be struck. The theory is that the human brain works in much the same way, the problem is Database Administrators and Developers alike constantly strive to increase the performance of the database. We humans do not make specific efforts to strike the same balance within the inner tables of our brains database.

Databases are optimized in many, many ways. Two of the most common ways are:

  • Large tables are broken down to store data in multiple related tables.
  • Indexes are created and used to retrieve the vital links between these tables.

An index is just that. You've seen an index in you local phone book. In the front it tells you where in this massive book to find people in a certain city, or where to find businesses of certain types. Or where to find only those with the last name that starts with a Y. Databases do the same thing; internally the index is stored in memory for quick retrieval when a query for data retrieval is executed. Simply put, someone asked the database for data and the database used an index to help it find that information quicker.

We have indexes in our brains just as the databases do. Case in point, I don't know the words to a certain song (I mean I just don't know them) until someone starts the song; then suddenly I can continue to sing every word, that person that started the song "Hit an index" in my brain. I don't have to "Remember" the entire song, just the index. This means the entire song is not "In Memory" but rather "On Disk". The index is in memory and is readily available to me when needed. We all have indexes for many other items "On Disk" in our brains. Sometimes you lose the index, and the entire song is gone.

Where is the " Battle ", the battle is in Recalling or Figuring it out. I don't have to memorize my address, I know where I live. If I instead memorize my cities address scheme I can calculate my address (19 blocks west of Central is 19th Ave . etc.). This is where database administrators and developers alike are constantly running their technical balancing act. The decision to calculate the result, or recall the result! Should I memorize all the data and count on indexes, or should I memorize the formula and count on calculation to retrieve the data.

Can people benefit, I think we can! I find myself naturally counting more on "Calculating" the result then I do memorizing. It works ok because I'm a logical thinker and it comes naturally. I get left behind far too often though. The problem is in remembering to do many things, or remembering whether I did something at all. Important dates, even vacations go by the way side. My memory recall is all but shot because I count on logic as a crutch. In a pinch I can pull it off but it takes a lot more effort for me to Recall then it does to deduce. If I were to optimize my inner-indexes and work on utilizing my recall more often, just as DBA's do, it might very well be of great benefit to many.

Could I increase my ability to recall? In the database there is a concept called re-indexing. It's basically forcing the database to recreate it's index. The more often it does this the more current and fresh the index is. Should I be doing the same thing for myself? If I were to go over and over and over a specific item (Such as what I had to do in grade school for the Preamble to the Constitution) I will insure it is stored and it's index is strong. But do I need to go over the entire text over and over. If I already have the data (I've already experienced the vacation) and simply don't want to lose it, I should re-index weekly (maybe monthly). This should insure I do not lose the data and could increase my reliance on memory, in hopes of striking a balance.

There are others around me who count on recall as a crutch and have deductive reasoning fall by the way side. I think they are in the same boat on the opposite end. In the database we either increase the CPU (brain exercises) or we decrease the amount of CPU required by normalizing the data in a logical way (break down the tables). This simply forces the system to rely on memory instead of over burdening the processor. What could one do to decrease their reliance on memory?

Simple Search Engine Results

Without "Tricking" any search engine the most simplistic approach to getting found by those looking for your offering is to insure your specific Internet Community knows what your site is about. Search Engines do not trust the content on your site to tell them what it is about. There is a very solid reason for this, they've been duped. Web Sites have been "traffic" driven for a very long time. The term " Internet Super Highway " was coined under the premise that when a website is receiving a lot of visitors it is valuable real estate on a popular curve in the freeway of information. The more popular a section of highway is the more expensive the billboard space is. So since the people making the sites were only compensated by advertising dollars they drove traffic in. They did not care what kind of traffic; they just wanted visitors, lots of them. And they were duly compensated, even if the traffic was related to a term that was searched very often but had nothing to do with the site. The Search Engines began to lose face, people would stop using a particular engine because they could not find what they were looking for, they simply found sites that had a lot of banners and had a lot of the text they were looking for on the page, but nothing to offer. This is why the Search Engines do not trust your web site. They must determine what your site is about in some other logical manner. Remember these are machines, they only know numbers. So instead of the machine counting the words on your site, they count the words on all the sites that link to you. The sites that link to you are your Internet Community. If those sites are related, and they are popular, and you make sure the search engines can count the right words the right way, then you will have explained to the engine what your site is about without having to trick it in any way.

Search Engines must trust your internet community. Mathematically they have no choice. They are like any system, they are data driven, they have very little data to go by other than the data on your site and all of the sites that link to you. But because this is all they have to work with, they use every miniscule piece of information within. They look at title tags of your site and the site linking to you. They look at the text under the images, the descriptions, the keywords, and the text in the link. They count all the links on all the pages and all the pages, pages. They are counting everything.

When competing for a specific term all those little things that they are counting come into play! This is when they compare your site to other sites and decide the order in which to place your site. If the other site has more qualifiers than you they get a higher ranking. So in no way are you tricking the search engine, but an effort must be made to increase the qualifiers so your site can compete. Knowing which qualifiers hold more value to the search engine can help a great deal. The trump card of all qualifiers is the text in the link on all those other sites that point to you.

This is simple search engine results because the most effective sites are campaign driven. What this means in a nut shell is that they don't focus just on one term. When competing on many terms the playing field is complicated exponentially. Much attention must be paid to the details, and as you can imagine there are a lot of those laying around in our new Internet media.

You should have list of the names of all of your competitors. This can be run as a geo-targeted ad if you service only a particular area -- especially when you have national companies listed as your competitors.
These campaigns should be run in at least the major 3 search engines -- Google, Yahoo & MSN. An important point to make is that Yahoo and MSN usually have a better ROI because there are fewer people bidding against you on pay-per-click in these search engines, which thus reduces the cost-per-acquisition. The bottom line is that it is important to run ads in all three search engines.
Finally, Take Over the Natural (Non-Sponsored / Non-Pay-Per-Click) Results to drive more targeted traffic to your website
For small businesses, there are a couple approaches which work well. To show up for searches in the keyword list of all of the cities you service, multiplied by the services you offer, making a page listing all of the services you offer and then all of the cities you serve will get you to show up well in the search engine results for many of these searches.
To show up for the more competitive terms, due to the search engine algorithms, you are going to need links to your website. We have a pre-sorted list of directories you can submit your site to in order to build inbound links to your website ( be sure to list the Title as the keywords you want to show up for), and going through this list is usually enough to get on the first page for any major profession in most major metropolitan areas.

Set aside an hour and a half per article if you’re writing them all yourself.

• Creating the copy-2 hours (for a 1 or 2 article ezine)
• Formatting the ezine-1 hour
• Sending the ezine-10 minutes
• Testing/tracking-1 hour per ezine


As you develop a method for creating your ezine this process can be significantly shortened. I’m a writer so it takes me much less time to craft the copy but my graphic design skills are shall we say…challenged so it takes me much more time to design and format a ezine.


Regardless, the initial time commitment will be greatly shortened as you become more accustomed to the process. So don’t be deterred by the initial time commitment.

Both Google’s Quality Score and Yahoo!’s Quality Index aim to provide a richer user experience for searchers. But advertisers that optimize their Yahoo! Sponsored Search accounts apart from their Google accounts can reap the benefit of a lower minimum bid and a lower cost per click.

Quality Index, in the simplest sense, is Yahoo!’s relevancy measure of a sponsored search ad. Yahoo! assigns a Quality Index to each ad group and each text ad to determine your minimum bid and cost per click. While landing page quality and overall keyword competitiveness are factors in Yahoo!’s Quality Index, the most important factor is your ad’s click through rate (CTR). Here are some quick tips to improve your CTR and Yahoo! Quality Index:

Establish a market-to-message match. Use the primary keyword in each ad group in your text ads. Use the keyword in the title and at least once in the description to establish relevancy, and to make your ad stand out when a user searches for the exact query. I have installed and tested on the order of 50-75 different CMS systems for both windows and Linux platforms. Many are half-baked development efforts, some are close but still not there. Joomla is the most complete CMS I have found to date. None of the CMSs I have found have been perfect and that is the case with Joomla. The documentation is poor. The learning curve even if you simply install it and click around in the manager is very steep and will take a web geek ~16-24 hours to master. That said, Joomla, once you make the commitment to figure it out, is a world of opportunity. The structure of the CMS environment, although sometimes seeming very convoluted, is very flexible and allows for granular modifications to the environment. There are many available add-ons and templates and it appears the community as well as the core development are very active. Final word.. it could be better, but at the moment, this is as good as it gets.

Researchers turn spammers to investigate economies of spam

Researchers at the University of California hijacked an infamous botnet to ascertain the success of spam and recorded a much lower success rate than anticipated.

According to the researchers who infiltrated the Storm spam network to investigate the economics of spam, "the best way to measure spam is to be a spammer". By hijacking the network to send spam campaigns the team were able to follow, and collect results for, three spam campaigns involving millions of spam messages.

The researchers modified Storm's command-and-control system to insert their own links in spam emails that led to websites they created instead of those the spammers were advertising.

The results weren't particularly impressive considering the hype of spammers earning millions of dollars per day. Despite sending in excess of 350 million emails, just 28 resulted in a sale, a conversion rate of just 0.00001%. However, when extrapolated across the entire Storm network the researchers estimate a response rate nearer 1.5% bringing in daily revenues of around $7,000, what they term a "healthy enterprise".

"Spam-based marketing is a curious beast. We all receive the advertisements but few of us have encountered a person who admits to following through on this offer and making a purchase," said the report (.pdf).

"And yet the relentlessness with which such spam continually clogs inboxes, despite years of energetic deployment of anti-spam technology, provides undeniable testament that spammers find their campaigns profitable. Someone is clearly buying."
